AIDSO Congratulates the Protesting Students as NExT Deferred under the Pressure of Students’ Movement

 Students Pledge Date 13.07.2023 –

Today, in a public notice, the National Medical Commission has declared to defer the National Exit Test (NExT) until further directions from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Congratulating all the students, Doctors, Parents and others who have participated in the countrywide movement against NExT on behalf of AIDSO, Sourav Ghosh, the General Secretary of the organisation has issued the following press statement:

“It’s a victory of the united students’ movement and we congratulate all who took an active part in the movement. This again proves that if the student’s community fight unitedly in the correct direction, they can force even the mighty rulers to retreat and demands can be achieved only by the movement.

It is to be noted that the provision of NExT is there in Clause 15 of NMC Act 2019. When NMC Bill was published in 2017, since then AIDSO started organising countrywide movement. After the recent announcement of NExT on 27 June 2023, at the call of AIDSO countrywide movement was strengthened further and the students, doctors, and parents of different institutions of all the states participated. Under pressure from the mighty students’ movement, the Central Government and in turn, the NMC is compelled to issue the notification.

But we should keep in mind that henceforward, there may be further attempts to introduce NExT again. We appeal to all to be prepared for stronger movement in future if there is a further attempt to introduce NExT again.

We also appeal to the medical students of the country to build up a nationwide movement to improve the educational infrastructure of the medical colleges and against the commercialisation of medical education.”
